This is going to be an exciting year in History!
Aaron made it through his first week of school with flying colors. He had a positive attitude about everything, including homework! I know I gave birth to this boy but he sure doesn't act like me at all, and that's a good thing! :) I didn't have his upbeat attitude about everything at 13, or 15, 16 or even at 42! Aaron's Bible course consists of two parts: Book of Acts and Joshua and Judges. The first semester course, Book of Acts, is designed to give a basic overview of the life of Peter and Paul, the beginning of the church, and the spread of the gospel to the Gentiles and eventually the world through Paul's missionary travels. He completed his first memory verse quiz and scored an "A" for reciting John 1:1-5. He started reading a biography on the life of David Livingstone. In Pre-Algebra last week he was reviewing basic skills in Arithmetic. .. notation, numeration, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. He is right back at it again this week with a lessons on order of operations, principles of math (commutative, associative, identity and distributive principles), rounding off whole numbers and Roman Numerals. The first week of English was also spent in reviewing rules for abbreviations and capitalization, how to use the library and reference material. He completed his first spelling and vocabulary quiz and scored an "A". He started reading a variety of short stories and poems in his Literature book and started poetry memorization - Footprints on the Sands by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In Science, the first week was an intro into Science. The topics studied were the scientific method, soil characteristics, soil nutrients and the nitrogen cycle. He observed how to make your own soil profile by digging through the different layers of soil and collecting the topsoil and subsoil layers to observe the layering of soil and the color and texture of it. He observed an experiment that demonstrated the interaction between water and various soil types. Aaron's teacher for American History, Mr. McBride is outstanding. He has been teaching for 31+ years and his love for the subject along with his knowledge and experience in it just makes the study of History so interesting, exciting and fun. I get up extra early just to watch the class for myself. Some of the highlights from the first week: God's timing in the discovery of America, Native American Heritage, Christopher Columbus, Defeat of the Spanish Armada, Spanish and French Exploration. This week we are just getting into the first English settlement. This is going to be an exciting year in History! A little peak into the first week of the life of an 8th grader.
