I leave you with a small introduction to the upcoming study to whet your appetite.
It’s going to be a fun ride!
The Book of Ruth
“Welcome to the land of the down and out, where dreams have been dashed and lives have been lost.” God can seem distant at times like this… when things don’t go the way we’ve planned… when people we love dearly die… or when careers fail and the money runs out. This is the place where no one wants to be and yet that is where the book of Ruth starts.
No one knows the feeling of abandonment more than Naomi and Ruth. Their story begins with the worst—death, famine, and poverty. Naomi has no money, no husband, no sons, no land. She isn’t saying words like, “blessed be the name of the Lord”, "my cup runneth over." She isn’t sharing #blessed on Instagram that’s for sure. Instead she’s saying, “I have lost EVERYTHING and I am BITTER!!” And if you are honest with yourself, maybe you feel like her too. I know I sure have. I remember traumatic times in my own life when I wondered where God was. Like the time when I was 10 years old and my dear grandmother was tragically killed in a car accident. An event that utterly turned our world upside down in a heartbeat. Or when my husband’s business failed and it left us without an income and a home. We had to move our family into my parent’s basement and start rebuilding our lives all over again. I can relate to the heartache. I'm sure you can too. And yet where’s God in all of this? He remains silent... or so it seems… at first glance.
But just because difficult times like these seem hopeless, it doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. The book of Ruth doesn’t end with despair. Things are going to change for Ruth and Naomi. The story brims with hope because God works on behalf of the two widows in ways they least expect. In studying the book of Ruth we’ll find that on the surface, this book tells the story of two widows and a landowner, but behind the scenes we will discover a faithful, loving God moving in a powerful way that transforms the lives of all involved.
Join me in the journey through the Book of Ruth and we’ll witness first hand what a loving, faithful God can do. Amen.
