We are off to a good start to the week.

Our Bible studies have been focused around the final days leading up to Jesus' arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection. As the week of studies unfold, a large cast of characters play out a drama that touches on every extreme of human emotion; joy, hope, fear, betrayal, pain, and grief.

- Jesus Enters Jerusalem

- Jesus & the Temple Traders

- Judas Plots to Betray Jesus

- Preparing for the Passover

- The Last Supper

- The Garden of Gethsemane

Today we were grief stricken and full of sorrow with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The joyful, incredible conclusion to the story awaits us on Easter Sunday.

Today we worked on an Easter tradition that has been in my family as long as I can remember - egg coloring. Lindsay was always excited to take this project and run with it. Had she been here, the creativity with the egg coloring would have been on a whole other level.

Syd's Science Unit Study for the week ~ FROGS

Vocabulary: cold-blooded, hibernate, amphibian, metamorphosis, gills, camouflage, habitat, species, prey, predator, etc.

"Amphibian" comes from two Greek words: amphi meaning "both", and bios which means "life". This refers to the way in which amphibians start their lives in water and later live on land.

We are taking a few days this week to answer questions about frogs. What are they, what do they sound like, how many different kinds of frogs are there, how are baby frogs born, what are tadpoles, how do tadpoles grow, what do frogs eat, the frog anatomy, what kinds of enemies do they have, frog vs. toads, etc.

Since frogs take in air and water through their skin, sick frogs often mean that the air or water is unhealthy for people, too. Scientists now watch frogs closely, especially in city areas. If they find sick frogs, they do studies to be sure that the air and water are safe and clean for people and frogs.

We will gather information this week about frogs and collect the information to use in a lapbook activity.

I sent my request in to the library to have them pull a few books from their shelves on frogs to help with our study.
Homeschooling books about frogs
We caught three tadpoles from the lake on Saturday to observe them change and grow into frogs (metamorphosis). The kids will record their observations in their notebooks.
Well, that's a little preview of what we are doing this week. Yesterday I gathered up some Easter goodies for the grandkids and shipped them out today. ;o)

I better get to making the cookie dough for the special cookies we will be making tomorrow, keeping with our week of celebrating the Easter season.

Indian Study: Sand Art Craft

4/12/2014

Flying through our History study to the Southwest, looking for Indians!

My kids got a kick out of the meaning behind Geronimo's real name. Geronimo was a famous Apache warrior originally named Goyathlay or "The One Who Yawns". He was given the name for his easygoing nature.
In 1858, after Mexican troops killed his family, he led raids against the Mexicans and the U.S. The Mexican troops gave him the name Geronimo. Every time I see his name, it makes me yawn! :D

After learning about the customs of the Apache, Hopi, Navajo, Zuni and Pueblo Indians, we worked on another craft project.

Our project for the lesson was a sand painting but we did NOT do it the way the Navajo medicine man used sand paintings! ;o) He used sand paintings to remove spells the Navajo believed made people ill. The medicine man dyed the sand by mixing pollen, cornmeal, ground charcoal, and powered minerals. Then he painted on the floor of the sick person's hogan (cone shaped home) with the sand and let it dry. The sick person sat on the painting and the medicine man chanted. At the end of the ceremony, he destroyed the picture to get rid of the bad spell.

No sand paintings were sat on during or after the craft project and there were no bad spells cast out of or on anyone, however, a few bad attitudes cropped up when we couldn't get the cornmeal and dye to mix properly!

SUPPLIES

- plastic cups
- cornmeal
- food dyes
- cardboard
- pencils
- glue
- paintbrush

Divide the cornmeal equally among the plastic cups. Add several drops of food coloring to each cup to make different colors of "sand". Stir well with spoon. Our colors didn't turn out very vibrant and we used 20 drops of food coloring for each cup of color. It took a bit of patience to stir the color into the cornmeal.

Use the pencil to lightly sketch a picture on the cardboard.

When you are happy with your picture, you can begin painting with sand. Cover the section you wish to paint with glue.

Sprinkle the color of sand you would like over the top.

Tap off the excess sand.

Repeat until your picture is covered in colored sand. Let it dry and display it.

Happy sand painting!

Nature Walk

4/12/2014

We experienced summer weather today, in April, with the temperature reaching into the low 80's.

Outdoors is the place to go on a beautiful day like this. We headed out on a nature walk to explore and see what types of flowers and animals we would discover along the way.

Picture
There were many adorable little turtles along the lake but taking a photo of them was difficult. As soon as they would hear the slightest noise, they would jump into the lake and hide.

We found tadpoles and scooped up three to bring home and observe their transformation over the coming weeks. I guess they like to eat lettuce and cabbage. I boiled some lettuce for 10 minutes and then cooled it and gave them a little flake of soggy lettuce for supper, bon appetit.

The weather tomorrow will be a repeat of today so hopefully we will be able to go for a hike after church.

Here's to family nature walks!
