"Groundblog" Homeschool Day - Things to do on Groundhog Day

1/31/2014

Last evening the kids and I were reading a book from our local library on the history of Groundhog Day. I didn't realize that a groundhog and a woodchuck are one and the same. ;o)

On the last page of the book the author gave a website to check out,
www.groundhog.org. What a neat website! It is loaded with ideas and  activities to do with your kids.

  • thumbprint art
  • shadow play
  • groundhog cookie recipe
  • coloring page
  • crossword puzzle
  • letter trace
  • word search
  • word scramble
  • maze
  • games AND MORE

My favorite part of the activities listed on the website were the songs. We were up way past our bedtimes singing and laughing over the songs. I thought I would include one here just for amusement.

"Up At the Knob"

(Tune: Up On the Housetop [words by Kathy Bish])

Version 1: IF PHIL DOES NOT SEE HIS SHADOW

Up at the Knob the groundhogs pause,

sitting up and showing claws.

Is there a shadow here today?

If not, spring is on the way.

Cheer, Cheer, Cheer, Spring is here!

Cheer, Cheer, Cheer, Spring is here!

Up at the Knob it is so clear,

we're waiting for Springtime to appear!

Version 2: IF PHIL SEES HIS SHADOW

Up at the Knob the groundhogs pause,

sitting up and showing claws.

"I see my shadow," says old Phil,

six more weeks of winter still.

Boo hoo hoo, we're so blue!

Boo hoo hoo, we're so blue!

Up at the Knob when shadows come,

six more weeks till we have sun.

Tornado In a Bottle Science Project - Abeka Homeschool

1/30/2014

Sydney is learning about wind and storms in Science. Sometimes the wind isn't so friendly. Windstorms come from hot air meeting with cold air.
Hurricanes are windstorms that begin over the ocean. Tornadoes are windstorms that build up over hot land, funnels of spinning air.

She just couldn't wait to try out her latest Science Project: Creating a Tornado AND Hurricane in a bottle.

MATERIALS:

  • 2 2-liter clear plastic pop bottles (empty and clean)
  • water
  • duct tape

PROCESS:

Fill one of the bottles two-thirds full of water.

Use duct tape to fasten the two bottles together. Make sure to tape tightly to make sure that no water will leak out when you turn the bottle over.

Turn the tornado maker, so that the bottle with the water is on top. Swirl the bottle in a circular motion. A tornado will form in the top bottle as the water rushes into the bottom bottle creating a hurricane.

EXPLANATION:

Swirling the water in the bottle while pouring it out causes the formation of a vortex. The vortex looks like a tornado in the bottle. The formation of the vortex makes it easier for air to come into the bottle and allows the water to pour out faster.

This was fun! Give it a try!
