Most states require the teaching of their state’s history in one of the elementary grades. This year Sydney was learning Georgia state history. I used My State Notebook from Abeka Book as a guideline in developing this course of study for her, but the real informational backbone of the study came from Georgia State History by Joy Dean. That resource saved not only my time, but my sanity as well! Another important resource I used was a colorful travel guide I was also able to order from the Georgia state website, free of charge. It was literally loaded to the max with pictures from all around the state that we used in the construction of the notebook.
A typical course of study for state history would be topics such as symbols, history, landmarks, government, climate/geography, industries, cities, wildlife, and plant life.
Syd will be finishing up the state notebook next week with a brief section on the history of the city we live in.
